In 1948, Jews realized their wildly improbable dream of a state, and Palestinians experienced the mass flight and expulsion called the Nakba, or catastrophe. London CNN —Hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman and his wife Neri Oxman are buying a stake in Tel Aviv’s stock market in what the exchange said Wednesday was a “strong vote of confidence” in Israel’s economy. The couple have agreed to buy a stake of nearly 5% in the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE), joining other buyers of around 17 million shares in total, the exchange said in a statement. But his latest investment suggests he is optimistic about the prospects for Israeli companies despite the country’s ongoing war against Hamas. The value of stocks listed on the exchange has swung wildly since October 7, the day Hamas launched its deadly attack on Israel. A report by Business Insider in early January alleged that Oxman had plagiarized parts of her doctoral dissertation.

A hostage release deal agreed between Israel and Hamas in late November ended after six days, with more than 100 freed. Others are angry at what they see as a failure by the Red Cross to help them. Cohen accused the Red Cross of failing in its mission to protect civilians. He was also critical of the Red Cross, which he accused of failing in its mission to protect civilians. “The countries that support the Red Cross should turn off the tap and tell them there’s no more money,” he said Monday.

An aerial shot from a Nov. 11, 2023, protest in Tel Aviv demanding the release of Israeli hostages held by militant Palestinian group Hamas was falsely shared as footage from a pro-Palestinian protest held in Israel amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. However, the image is a Reuters photograph taken on Nov. 11, 2023, showing a protest held in Tel Aviv demanding the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza who were seized in the Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel by Hamas gunmen. The demonstration took place in the square in front of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Separate anti-war protests calling for a ceasefire in Gaza have also taken place in Israel, including in Tel Aviv. The aerial photograph of a large crowd shows a demonstration in Tel Aviv demanding the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, not a pro-Palestinian protest.

“This is pursuing a proven and failed strategy,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said in a recent radio interview. Calls for a cease-fire by Ms. Ocasio-Cortez and others drew a stern rebuke from the White House, and she faced backlash for voting against a bipartisan resolution that expressed strong support for Israel. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, who did not agree to an interview, met in Washington last month with the families of Jewish hostages kidnapped by Hamas. was trying to infiltrate the Democratic Party “to impose the ideological litmus tests on Israel” and “cleanse” those who disagree with them. CNN —A British Airways flight from London to Tel Aviv made an abrupt U-turn shortly before it was due land in the Israeli city on Wednesday as the airline canceled all flights to the destination amid safety concerns. The airline said it had halted services to and from Tel Aviv as of late Wednesday. “Safety is always our highest priority and following the latest assessment of the situation, we’re suspending our flights to and from Tel Aviv,” it said in a statement to CNN. “We continue to monitor the situation in the region closely.” British Airways did not say when flights would resume. The situation remains fluid and all information is subject to sudden change, but here’s what travelers need to know following the attacks. Among the locations Hamas has claimed it is targeting is Ben Gurion International Airport, Israel’s international hub, located just outside Tel Aviv. As for Israeli airlines, El Al, the country’s flag carrier, issued a statement on October 8 saying it would continue to operate as usual. Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines has issued guidance for passengers with flights booked to or from Tel Aviv between October 7-14. “The situation in Israel continues to be unpredictable,” said the US Embassy in Israel in a statement, which advised American citizens in Israel to contact the embassy in Jerusalem or the consulate in Tel Aviv.

Apparently the mayor chose to follow a similar practice to his trip to Israel. On a whirlwind three-day visit, Mr. Adams dined at the Whiskey Bar and Museum in Tel Aviv, a sleek restaurant with more than 1,000 types of whiskey. He was photographed with the son of an Israeli billionaire as he enjoyed Tel Aviv’s buzzing nightlife scene. Mr. Adams may have been thousands of miles away from home, but was still very much himself: high energy, highly quotable, spiritual, ideologically to the right of many Democrats in his party, wary of the press, fond of police drone demonstrations and foremost a foodie. The trip gave Mr. Adams some distance from a series of pressing challenges in New York City, allowing him to focus on preferred topics, like his ties to the Jewish community, public safety and courting business.

Jerusalem CNN —Saudi Arabia has appointed its first ambassador to the Palestinians, in a move that comes amid talks with the United States over a possible deal to normalize relations between the Gulf kingdom and Israel. Palestinians maintain that the eastern part of the city should serve as the future capital of a Palestinian state. All members of the Arab bloc, including Saudi Arabia, recognize Palestinian statehood and the kingdom maintains a Palestinian embassy in the capital Riyadh. The move comes amid reports of a normalization deal in the works between Saudi Arabia and Israel, with the Unites States involved in the rapprochement. Miller’s comments came after a Wall Street Journal report saying that the US and Saudi Arabia had agreed on the “broad contours” of a normalization deal.

Jerusalem CNN —Demonstrators took to the streets in Israel on Tuesday for what they are calling a day of “disruption and resistance” against the government’s moves to overhaul the country’s judicial system. The bill is one part of a sweeping package of judicial overhaul measures that would weaken the judiciary. But opponents of the plan say it threatens to turn Israel into a dictatorship by removing the most significant check on government actions. Demonstrators plan to protest at the country’s international airport, Ben Gurion, later on Tuesday. Netanyahu paused the legislative process in March following an unprecedented general strike that shut down much of Israel’s economy.

Jerusalem CNN —Large crowds of protesters across Israel have come out in the 27th consecutive week of demonstrations against the government’s judicial overhaul plans. The protests come just before the bill to lessen judicial oversight of the executive and legislative branches will get its first reading in the Knesset, the national legislature, on Monday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has renewed its efforts to pass judicial overhaul, this time in stages, after six months of fierce opposition from center, left and even right-wing citizens, military reservists, and political parties. Israel has no check on the power of the Knesset other than the Supreme Court. As the protests reached their peak this Saturday, social media videos and Israeli press reported Israeli police using water cannons to clear demonstrators from blocking one of Tel Aviv’s main highways.
